The International Cytometry Certification Examination (ICCE) has announced that Pam Shaw, our Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) Staff Scientist at the Center for Environmental Health Sciences, has earned her Certified Cytometrist credential. The Certified Cytometrist credential is the only credential that confirms an individual's knowledge of the wide range of scientific and technical areas involved in current approaches to cell measurement. The C.Cy. or CCy designation after an individual's name indicates that they have earned the credential of Certified Cytometrist.

To be designated as a Certified Cytometrist, an applicant must have four years of cytometry work experience, or a bachelor's degree and two years of cytometry work experience. They must also pass a stringent examination that measures knowledge of instrumentation, sample sources and preparation, data analysis, safety, quality control, experimental design, and theoretical principles.

The ICCE is the result of two years of collaboration by the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC), the International Clinical Cytometry Society (ICSS), and the European Society for Clinical Cell Analysis (ESCCA). The organizations received strong financial support from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation and valuable input from cytometrists in many locations and work settings. The ICCE recognizes professional excellence among cytometrists, aids cytometry employers in identifying qualified cytometrists, and improves the quality of cytometry applications worldwide.
