Services

The core consists of an exposure room where acute and chronic exposures can be conducted to a variety of well-characterized airborne agents.  This will be a fully equipped facility that supports animal housing within the core.  A major emphasis will be to investigate the health effects from exposure to wood burning emissions, a common indoor and outdoor pollutant in many areas of the country and in developing nations. Additional areas of investigation will include small animal irradiation.

The technical staff will facilitate services and training of general surgical procedures and will perform respiratory function assessment, followed by tissue harvest and preparation. In addition, the Core will support studies that include a range of health outcomes associated with air pollutants, such as cardiovascular effects.

  • Inhalation exposures
  • Small animal irradiation
  • Instillation of materials – intranasal, intra-tracheal, oral pharyngeal
  • Aerosol antigen challenge
  • General surgical techniques - lung lavage, cardiac bleeds, tissue preparation, bone marrow
  • Analysis of inflammation and cell recruitment
  • Advice on methodology and protocol development for inhalation exposure

Training

Support:

  • Assistance in experimental design, data analysis and developing new methods is available by appointment with the Staff Scientist.
